Winter, Johnny: Live Though the '80s (DVD)

Here we have more archival live footage of legendary blues-rock guitarist Johnny Winter, and a perfect companion release to the previous entry in the MVD series, Live Through the '70s. Here, you get plenty of exciting live performances from throughout the 1980's, which happened to be when Johnny was putting out plenty of sizzling blues albums on the Alligator Records label.

Though many of the tracks on display are in more of a blues style than his 'harder rock' journey in the 70's, Winter's tone and frenzied solos still have plenty of explosive rock power. Check out this amazing leads on "It's All Over Now" or the upbeat version of the Rolling Stones classic "Jumpin' Jack Flash" to see why Winter has been considered one of the all time best guitar players since his appearance on the scene back in the late 1960's. Some of the video quality on a few of these clips is pretty poor (especially Toronto, Passaic and Nashua for instance), but the audio for the most part is very good, which will almost make you wish that a bonus CD came with this DVD set so you can take these red-hot blues rock raveups in the car with you and crank up the volume. Johnny's tone is menacing throughout no matter the venue, and whether he's flying through blistering, speedy leads or firing off some molten slide, it's damn impressive. Funny scene during the end of a scorching "Johnny B. Goode" in Denmark in front of a wild and very large crowd, when Winter gets hit with a bottle and immediately stops playing and orders the band to evacuate the stage, but not before telling the crowd "We came here to play our music for you, and you throw things at us!". You have to wonder how long the actual set lasted before they left the stage.

This is ultimately a very solid collection of live performances, and despite the sub-par quality of some of the footage, for the serious Johnny Winter aficionado, this is a DVD you'll want to make sure you add to your collection.
