Recorded in Paris, France on April 23, 2010, New Morning-The Paris Concert features legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield and his very capable band, comprised of drummer Bill Stewart, bassist Ben Street, and pianist Michael Eckroth, playing a dozen smoldering songs in front of a very appreciative audience.
Scofield has been around the jazz scene for quite some time, and has spent time with established musicians such as Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Gary Burton, Charles Mingus, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Henderson, and many others. Mostly though, 'Sco', as he is often called, is known for his prolific solo work, and you get a great snapshot of what this guy is all about here on this red hot live set. The guitarist and his band run through a blistering set of jazz, funk, and R&B tinged instrumental pieces which feature intricate ensemble work and plenty of solos. Pianist Eckroth, enjoying his first performance in France, delivers a wide assortment of majestic notes on the ivories while the rhythm team lock into some serious grooves, which allows 'Sco' to explore some serious mileage on his guitar neck. At over 2 hours of stunning visual & audio quality (the concert was filmed in high definition TV), you really feel like you are there sitting in the audience as 'Sco' and his band rip through jazz-funk tracks such as "Woody 'n' You", "Hive", and "Groove Elation", or the many extended passages of intense improvisation where the band lock into adventurous post-bop.
In short, if you are a jazz lover, guitar fan, or loyal John Scofield admirer, you'll want to add this excellent DVD to your collection.
