October Falls: A Collapse of Faith

Off the loads of promos I've gottten to review in the past, October Falls' EP remains one of my favorites. That's why I was real happy to receive their third full length. Too bad, I never got the other releases though…Anyways, I'm glad to see this act remained faithful to its style and sound. I got worried upon reading that "moving even – further from those acoustic-folk beginning", only to be re-assured while listening this new album. Yes those acoustic parts are still present and the folksy flame is literally still burning!

The Finnish trio, brainchild of multi-instrumentalist P.Letho, has a darker edge than ever, still the melodiousness and sometimes even melancholia, are both making the way through. You have only one piece on this disc that is broken down into three parts: two long lasting (17-18 minutes) pleasures and a shorter 5 minutes closer. The last part is the crunchiest and heaviest piece found here. The other two contains all the essential October Falls elements making this band so pleasant to listen to. The last acoustic moments of opening part are the intro of the following movement. Yes, the acoustic guitars are very present and make frequent appearances during the calmer musical breaks. Not only that, but they remain in the background during the heavier black metal movements. These moments are melodic too and are mostly done at mid-tempo paces, much to my pleasure. The vocals are of a deep raspy style, which suits very the well the overall musical direction.

So, A Collapse of Faith is simply another fine folksy/black metal opus from October Falls and I highly recommend it.
