UFO: Rockpalast-Hardrock Legends Vol. 1

This is the companion CD to the DVD of the same name, featuring the revamped line-up of UFO after Michael Schenker & Paul Raymond left and were replaced by Paul Chapman and Neil Carter. Recorded in 1980 on their tour to support their then new album No Place to Run, the band run through a charged up set of classics as well as a few tunes from that album.

Though this live album won't win any awards for super quality audio (it pales next to Strangers in the Night) it's still a pretty good audio transfer from the DVD, and will be a must buy for those that picked up the DVD and want to take this stellar show out in the car or other places. Highlights include strong versions of the newer tracks "Long Gone", "Lettin' Go", "No Place to Run", "Making Moves" (one of the best tunes this line-up of the band ever recorded) and a scorching "Mystery Train", which sees new guy Chapman really laying down some wicked metallic blues rock riffs & solos. He also does an admirable job on the Schenker -era material like "Only You Can Rock Me", "Lights Out", "Too Hot to Handle", "Cherry", and "Doctor, Doctor", though you really miss the German guitar master on the lengthy "Rock Bottom", which is really his signature tune. Chapman is good, but he's not Schenker. The rest of the band is in fine form, especially the always impressive Phil Mogg, who has always been one of the most underrated vocalists in hard rock.

Some great photos of the show adorn the black & white booklet, making this is solid overally package and worthy addition to your UFO music collection.
