Vernaccini, Riccardo: Attracted To The Moon

Attracted To The Moon is the second album from indie Italian guitarist and composer Riccardo Vernaccini. I initially approached this disc with some degree of trepidation, thinking that it had to be just another typical guitar shredder album but I'm happy to report that Attracted To The Moon has a lot more going for it than just a bunch of blazing fret board runs. Oh sure Vernaccini can definitely shred with the best of them and there is a veritable shit load of intricate, lighting fast solos and flashy licks on display here, but he's also proven himself to be quite a versatile player by incorporating various different styles into his playing as well. For example on "Noche Magica" he deftly slides from a blistering electric solo straight into a perfectly executed acoustic flamenco passage, while on "Last Train To Tulsa" (wonder if he's ever been there) his solo is aimed directly at the cowpokes as he tosses in a few well placed country style licks. He's definitely covering a lot of different ground on this disc and I think this is something else that works in his favor and keeps this record interesting all the way through. The warm sounding keyboard sprinklings (Riccardo also plays bass, keys, piano and programmed drums here as well) also help to add further color and depth to "Ride High", "One Step To Heaven" and "Funk That Noise" and proves that in addition to be an accomplished guitarist, he's also a pretty competent keyboard player as well. I'm normally not a big fan of programmed drums, at least not when it comes to this kind of music, so I'd much rather here 'real' drums but I can honestly say there's little cause for concern as they in no way diminish what is a solid all round production job.

If you're a fan of guitar virtuoso's such as Joe Satriani and Greg Howe then I think you'll definitely appreciate the fact that Riccardo Vernaccini shares many of the same qualities as those accomplished musicians. More importantly though on Attracted To The Moon he's done an absolutely great job of really finding his voice on the instrument, which comes through loud and clear via his own unique playing style and a diverse range of musical influences.
