Ecnephias: Ways of Descention

Code666 is a cool Italian label that has been promoting the type of bands not afraid to push the envelope. Ecnephias is one of such interesting acts hailing from Italy. Founded by front man Mancan (vocals & guitars) in 1996, Ways of Descention is their third offering.

Although being labeled as obscure metal, this new album goes easily down your hearing equipment. This music is not too extreme or too soft, even less weird to point where it does not make any sense. The distorted riffing, occasional fast tempos and tremolo picking leads are there to remind us that this is metal music, but there are more things happening on this disc. This obscure music is full of harmonies while bearing a sense of drama, as well as a slight theatrical edge. The vocals of Mancan are superb here, especially in his clean rendition with a deep tone in them. His ability to sing in a Gregorian fashion is quite impressive, and his rasp is pretty good too. The melodic clean guitar parts combine gracefully with the piano and keyboard arrangements. A bit of samplings and electronics add their own little atmospheric touches in a few occasions.

Ways of Descention is a pleasant obscure Italian opus with plenty of intelligent song writing skills. I personally preferred the odd numbered tracks although there are no bad numbers on this one.
