Killing Joke: Absolute Dissent
Way back at the end of the seventies and beginning of the eighties Killing Joke were a Giant name in the New wave/ Punk scene, scoring numerous hits all over the world.
For a long time founding members Jaz Coleman and Paul Ferguson had not been speaking to another, until late 2009 when all the original members got together. Plans for an album were then made.
The result of this reunion is now under review. In today's life Jaz Coleman divides his time between composing for Prague Symphony Orchestra and Killing Joke rock . Can it come more diverse than that?
When we listen to the album, the guys still know how to make great music. I am not very familiar with the later Killing Joke music, my memory of Killing Joke stops with Kings and Queens and A Love Like Blood. This does not withhold me from telling you that this music is much more straight forward Rock tunes than I know Killing Joke made in the past.
Killing Joke still belongs in the Indie scene; that I can say for a fact. All over the album we find the different styles Killing Joke always played, the first four tracks could be categorized as Post punk. Track 5 is very electronically intoned. Tracks 6 and 7 could be described as almost hardcore metal. "The Raven King" is electronic/melodic rock with a twist. "Honour The Fire" is a straight metal song, whilst "Depthcharge" is full of electronic tones again. "Here Comes the Singularity", hell yeah that's a seventies alternative rock song. The last song "Ghosts On Ladbroke Grove" is very close to the progressive metal sound.
You see, there is something for a broad audience on this 2010 release from Killing Joke.
