Atrium Noctis: Home

Home came in as a really nice surprise. This quintet is hailing from Cologne, France. This is their latest effort; an hour long CD of good melodious darkness.

Although this album is hard to describe, I can say that it has the epic pagan label stamped on it. This is no simplistic act and their music touches different styles, moods and emotions. Eclectic and highly creative, Atrium Noctis is certainly, without having that avant-garde vibe mind you. On the other hand, a certain adventurous feel is showing up once and a while. Dual vocals composed of rasps on lead and growls backing them up, are you story tellers on this opus. Symphonic and ambient keyboards are adding a pleasant atmospheric tonality to many compositions. At times, they have a very good rendition of flute and violins, so one can mistakenly take them for the real organic instrument. Speaking of which, there are three instrumentals where the classical guitar work can be heard, to our greatest pleasure. The black /pagan metal canvas is crafted from varied paces, mostly moderate though, different moods, crunchy riffs and distorted guitars, all of this completed by numerous twists and turns. The compositions are elaborate, especially in the long lasting numbers like: "First Day in Hell" and "Azazel". The first one has a progressive edge while the other moves from doom, black and Oriental tones and is one of my very favorite tunes. Of course, all the shorter instrumentals with classical guitars are included in that list too.

Home is a beautifully dark, melodic and moody piece of European music.
