Tarja: What Lies Beneath

What Lies Beneath is the follow up to My Winter's Storm an album that showed Tarja Turunen has the potential to go it on her own, after being part of one of the best metal bands I have ever heard, Nightwish. I was impressed with many of the songs on her last release and so had no hesitations securing a copy of this newest album. Tarja is still so mesmerizing, I never get tired of hearing her amazing voice.

What Lies Beneath isn't a predictable album with a diverse gathering of music besides the expected operatic gothic rock/metal, and Tarja takes it all in stride. "Anteroom Of Death" seems a tad unusual at first and includes vocals from acappella metal band Van Canto; "Until My Last Breath" is an easier song to digest. "Dark Star" is one of my picks and quite a heavy track on which Tarja sings with Phil Labonte(All That Remains), another guest that comes with a scorching solo is guitar legend Joe Satriani who appears on the excellent "Falling Awake".

Sometimes band members depart and it works out for the better and other times it doesn't, well when Nightwish is concerned I still think the result of Tarja's dismissal falls into the later. This is Tarja's third solo recording and it's a very good one in fact her best yet I would score it 4.25/5 if I could, but ultimately What Lies Beneath isn't as good as her albums with former band Nightwish. Both were stronger together so it's a shame they couldn't have worked their issues out as together they released many outstanding albums.
