Suffering Souls: Sadistic Goat Complex

Originally formed in 1994 by Lord Esgaroth and Michael Sepulvera, Suffering Souls was then known as Dismal. Sadistic Goat Complex is their third album, and the work of the only remaining original founding member, Lord Esgaroth.

My first impression was this music sounded a bit like Cradle of Filth. No, no don't you worry since there is no leprechaun in this act! It does bear resemblances to COF without Danni's voices and it is not as gothic or elaborate either. So the good parts were secured while getting rid of the cheesy ones. This album is not as elaborate in the orchestrations, although the symphonic keyboards are adding just the right amount of atmosphere needed. Normally, these types of bands are made of numerous musicians and often even have an orchestra / classical musicians involved. Well Suffering Souls being the work of one artist, tells a lot about the talent of Garoth. Drum machines were used without causing any distraction; another plus point. The distorted guitars are juicy and the arpeggios/leads complete the melodious aspects. Sadistic Goat Complex is bearing a cool theatrical/dramatic vibe, often felt in the varied vocal renditions that include some wicked rasps as well.

Many great tracks are worth mentioning like: "Cursed Gates of Heaven", "Resurrected Messiah", "Chaotic Prophecies" and "Bloodstorm".

Suffering Souls: Sadistic Goat Complex

My Score:

In the mood for some orchestral/symphonic black metal? Well, then you've come to the right place with Sadistic Goat Complex, the latest from Suffering Souls. Fans of such acts as Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Borknagar, Old Man's Child, and Emperor will love the combination of crushing tremelo picked riffs, snarling vocals, frenetic blast beats, and over the top orchestral keyboards that are on display throughout this CD.

Tunes like "Cursed Gate of Heaven", "Ressurected Messiah", and "Elegance and Perversion" are all strong examples of melodic black metal, and it's hard not to love the sweeping keyboard orchestrations that adorn these otherwise heavy numbers. If you like things just a little more brutal, look no further than "Blessed in Blood", a completely raging track that is easily the most ferocious here.

If there's anything bad to say about Sadistic Goat Complex, it's that some of the arrangements tend to sound a little too alike, and though I know that's often a problem with many black metal acts these days, I think Suffering Souls possess many of the qualities that should take them to the next level with some seasoning on the songwriting side.

Otherwise, this is solid stuff and worth checking out if you are a fan of symphonic black metal.
