Godless Rising: Trumpet of Triumph

Trumpet of Triumph is Godless Rising's third full length in their career. The only original member left is Jeff Gruslin (Vital Remains). He is joined by Toby Knapp (guitars) and drummer Andy Jones.

This album is pretty much a kick in the jaw cocktail of brutality that mixes elements taken from both death and black metal. On the black metal side you have: rasps, fast & furious paces, blasphemy, tremolo pickings, some cool leads and a cool wicked atmosphere. As for death metal, you'll hear: growls and a somewhat melodic and technical edge. Varied are the vocals used here and, at times, this music become a quite chaotic madness. The guitar work is excellent, so you will find plenty of good riffs, distorted arpeggios as well as tasty solos. Their "atmospheric" black metal side is showing up by means of diverse samplings that include: church bells, war sounds, sheep, wicked laughers, fire, ritualistic voices, thunder and even some horses. So this is not only pure brutality or technical prowess. As a matter of fact, the cover art is a good indication about what you should expect from this release.

All in all, not a bad album, although a bit too relentless and furious for my liking. However, a couple tracks caught my attention: "Damnation of Angelic Soul" and "We Are Legion"
