Kruger: For Death, Glory and the End of the World

Huh, I was not sure what to think about this unknown act, so I decided to do some research. On Listenable's site you can see a picture of this odd quintet from Switzerland. By odd I mean: clean cut fellows wearing suits and shot in sepia and white like in early photography days; not your typical extreme metal outfit!

While listening this album, I was wondering whether I liked it or not, besides being puzzled about the type of music this was all about. You have a massively powerful sound production, the Swedish type, which was given to this recording. That power was not really applied to the guitar work oddly enough, but rather to the basic rhythmic section, bass and drums. Think of fat, rumbling and buzzing bass coupled with kicking drums as if they were a train, a bulldozer or both at the same time. This is real crushing music! On the other hand, the guitar playing is relatively shy when creating its juicy riffs and melodious arpeggios and the likes. Their weak spot are the vocals, since they are of a screamed/core nature, even if they remain somewhat discreet, fortunately. Kruger's compositions are muscular, in your face, slightly progressive, somewhat melodic and a tad technical too. It is said to be: "whiskey fuelled". I know this is a good band because they have played at the world famous Montreux's Jazz Festival. Looks like they have their Jazz's definition pretty extendable down there…

I did not find any of the compositions outstanding as such. They all pretty much follow the same path, as if they came from the same mold, but none are bad either. You will have to sample their work to find out if you enjoy being run into by a train!
