Zyzyn, Ezryn: Nobody Cares

Little known underground singer/songwriter, Ezryn Zyzyn, has self released a collection of 13 songs on a CD entitled, Nobody Cares. Ranging from Alternative Indie Modern Rock to Pop Rock fluff to Piano led Instrumentals; Zyzyn runs the gamut of colors on this release but leaves a messy sketch behind.

Clocking in at almost 50 minutes long, Nobody Cares never quite gets going. Songs have no hooks or substance to really pull the listener in from the get go. Opening track, "Nobody Cares", has an extremely bubbly, almost Radio Disney, flavor to it, and I could very easily hear this is a Volkswagen TV spot. This is an odd choice for a CD opener, especially when the eerie, Pink Floyd-ish "Dragon Fly" comes up next, with its slow and deliberate grazing.

Vocals performances are very middle of the road, getting the job done but not creating any type of stir. This is the overall case with the musical performances and songs on this CD, they just don't seem to go anywhere. The songs are not bad, per say, just very bland. Without a sweeping chorus to suck you in or a masterful musical statement, you are left on the outside looking in. A song like "My Crime" is a self indulgent journey into somewhere, but I just don't know where. It goes nowhere, as is the case with most of this CD.

As a singer/songwriter, I hope that Mr. Zyzyn can hone his craft and decide which direction that he wishes to drive down. Nobody Cares can very easily confuse the average listener that the music is trying to reach, which is that Modern Rock, droning type. Also, the record has an almost hopeless and dark feel to it, while the CD actually opens up with a song so commercially Pop and happy that I was expecting Justin Bieber's girlie voice to begin crooning! Nobody Cares is all over the place. It's not good nor bad and it will just leave you feeling indifferent.
