Danzig: Deth Red Saboath

The name Danzig sounded familiar although I don't actually recall having heard anything from this band. The vocals are reminiscent to some singer that I can't put my finger on. Oh well, such is a reviewer's life! Deth Red Saboath has been a long six years in the making. Danzig is the brainchild of American composer/ singer, Glenn Danzig. Besides him, this band is formed by Tommy Victor on guitar, drummer Johnny Kelly and bassist Steve Zing. This act is no newcomer because this is their ninth album since their 1988 debut. Glenn is also a graphic designer, photographer and comic book publisher.

Danzig presents itself as some sort of a bluesy heavy metal band bordering the doom territory. No fasts paces here or even a hint of harsh vocals, unfortunately. I know blues and heavy/doom metal are making better sounds than mixing blues and black metal as you can read in my "We Are the Cult of the Plains" review. Lots of great guitar work, distortion included and a Southern blues vibe to be witnessed on this disc; by far the most interesting parts to hear. I mean, the bass and drums do their jobs respectably, but keep a pretty low profile. Nothing too complex or outstanding, just containing some cool doom and bluesy tones. A word about the vocals now. I consider Glenn's pipes as dry, emotionless, possessing a limited range and I believe he's out of breath at times too. He should find a guy with a harsher, but clean, voice to communicate his blues. Still, a few tracks are worth to mention like: "Hammer of the Gods", "Black Candy", "Ju Ju Bone" and "Night Star Hel"
