Lightning Swords of Death: The Extra Dimensional Wound

The Extra Dimensional Wound is the latest Metal Blade release from Los Angeles' own black metal ensemble Lightning Swords of Death. From the production of the CD to the bands look, you would think that their origins were from somewhere in Scandinavia, but no, these guys are pure USA all the way.

Lightning Swords of Death go full throttle from start to finish on The Extra Dimensional Wound, pummeling the listener with relentless blast beats, blazing tremelo picked guitar riffs, booming bass (yes, you heard it right, AUDIBLE bass lines on a black metal album!), and some of the best growls, shrieks, and snarls courtesy of vocalist Autarch. Opening title track as well as "Nihilistic Stench" get things started off in a frenzy, and their raging attack is pure brutality in its intensity, but then with "Invoke the Desolate One", the sound gets beefier, once again thanks to those wonderful bass riffs from Menno, Thrudvang 's intricate drum blasts, and the thunderous riffs of Roskva. That slightly slower pace continues on "Damnation Pentastrike", a more textured yet equally blood curdling black metal gem, and near 12 minute closer "Paths to Chaos" throws everything at you but the kitchen sink, with Autarch especially spewing some monstrously evil rasps and Roskva crushing with some fierce riffs. Some added atmosphere in spots only helps elevate this song as one of the CDs most impressive cuts.

The Extra Dimensional Wound is certainly not the most original sounding black metal release you'll hear this year, but you have to give Lightning Swords of Death credit for coming up with a solid old school sounding release the ups the ante as far as the brutality goes and shows that they have plenty of chops to make it in the extreme metal world.
