Leimer, Kerry: Degraded Certainties

Degraded Certainties is the ninth studio album from ambient artist Kerry Leimer and can be found on the Palace of Lights label. Leimer, who contributes digital synthesis and signal processing is aided by two of his label mates: Gregory Taylor (additional treatments, signal processing) and Taylor Deupree (additional voices, post production, editing, mixing, mastering).

Ambient music is not really my cup of tea but I do appreciate what Leimer has to offer. The music is very mellow, which is what one can expect, and comes through in waves of electronic effects and sounds. Leimer has taken various audio files and has reshaped them into his own form of minimalistic ambient textures and sounds. The music is often quite soothing and always subtle using layers of sound and occasional electronic bleeps creating a relaxing atmosphere. This is music best listened to through a pair of headphones and preferably late at night. Music to sleep by perhaps. The songs do sound similar to one another and there is a slight droning effect to this music but thankfully there is also a fair amount of melody to be found as demonstrated by the angelic "Allotropy" and the somewhat darker sounds of "Hommage". "Common Nocturne" is also pretty in its own way but is a little too minimalistic for my tastes but the reprocessed piano sounds are quite nice.

Although I am not sure how much I will pull this one out I think there is plenty to like for fans of the ambient genre. Check out the samples provided on the label site.
