Mouga: The God and Devil's Schnapps

To finish up my recent crusade through some less interesting promos, it is more than time to conclude with The God and Devil's Schnapps.

Mouga is not only a nobody's type of name, but it also signals a half & half sort of band. That's right, half of this bad is good, while the other is terrible. The good news is regarding the music, or at least most of it and especially concerning the musicianship. The guitar work is excellent and the rhythmic section is not only tight, but can also pull some intricate time signatures. This area in their music combines complexity with melody in a nice little progressive way. The pace is varied, you'll hear a touch of keyboard here and even a bit of acoustic guitar on "I can Hold", a ballad on track #5. Now, let's talk about their worst element, the awful vocals. That's right, those are what make this album almost un-listenable sometimes. You have, on the left corner ( being inspired by my son's wrestling games) a lead singer that sounds like mixture of a bad imitation of David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era) and a cheesy power metal poodle. His opponent is some 'core metal crappy screamer, and it might as well be the same person .

Quite frankly, Mouga would be much better of as an instrumental act. This way we, music lovers, would appreciate the musicianship more, without being constantly distracted by those awful vocals.
