Ramesses: Take the Curse

Blackened doom? Don't know if there is 'officially' such a thing, but damn if these Brits known as Ramesses don't come close to mixing the crushing power & melancholy of Volume 4 era Black Sabbath with the hate filled violence of Gorgoroth. Take the Curse is their new release for Ritual Productions, a platter filled with plenty of evil intent and head crushing psychedelia.

Bombastic opener "Iron Crow" starts things off in fine fashion, complete with sludge laden riffage, atmosphere, and a hodgepodge of stoner shouts and psychotic rasps. "Terrasaw" is like Crowbar on quaaludes, and "Black Hash Mass" is a ponderous, evil dirge that could be the secret meeting of Black Sabbath, Mayhem, and Mercyful Fate. For my money though, it's the mysterious tracks like "Baptism Of The Walking Dead" and "Hand of Glory" that work the best, as they invoke chiling atmosphere by using sound effects, hellishly evil sounding black metal styled rasps, groaing doom/death moans, and massive riffs. A tune like "Khali Mist" has some of the fiercest, most twisting riffs I've heard in a doom related release in quite some time, and the middle atmospheric section is downright creepy and disturbing-put it to you this way, you wouldn't want to hear this walking through a graveyard in the middle of the night.

Though some of the tracks here tend to meander a little and follow a similar pattern, there's no shortage of trippy doom on Take the Curse flavored with a bit of black metal menace. Ramesses are a band to watch out for folks.
