Watain: Lawless Darkness

Sweden's Watain took the black metal world by storm with their Sworn to the Dark CD a few years back, and anticipation has been high for their latest Lawless Darkness. These guys used the vintage Scandinavian black metal framework and upped the ante on the brulity end, making for a killer release that left fans craving for more. Lawless Darkness, you'll be happy to know, is basically Sworn to the Dark Part 2, which for many will be a very good thing indeed.

Like pummeling blast beats, hellish vocals, and razor sharp guitar riffs? Well, there's plenty of that here. Look no futher than "Malfeitor" or "Death's Cold Dark", two merciless bashers that open up this powerful CD. Sound effects and lilting guitar arpeggios kick off the epic "Wolves Curse", a surprisingly melodic song for something so devastatingly pulverizing, and "Total Funeral" has some pretty complex riffery to go along with evil vocal shrieks and jackhammer blast beats. The progressive sounds of the 14-minute gem " Waters Of Ain" lets the band show their versatility, mixing atmospheric elements, extended instrumental passages, and melody into their brutal attack.

There aren't many black metal acts that are this convincing and this powerful these days without relying on gimmicks and past glories. Watain certainly have brought the goods yet again here with Lawless Darkness, which is sure to be one of 2010's hottest genre releases.
