Nyseius: Militiae

This obscure French metal act is offering their debut effort in the underground front. This album does not sound like something done by newcomers though, so my guess is those guys have some previous writing /recording experiences.

Nyseius possess an interesting take on the black metal arts. They often fall into the blastbeat /powerful /ferocious style with desperate and/or ghostly rasps. Dark/ambient keyboards introduce the album in a short instrumental called "Ibi Deficit Orbis". Them keys are then mostly found in the background, acting as an ambient instrument. This act is not frozen into hyper blasting mode fortunately, thus moderate tempos, intricacy and harmonies are taking part in their sound structure. Indeed, the fans will have the pleasure to listen to variation in their mood and tonalities. Moderate parts, crushing riffs, distorted arpeggios, and calmer moments with clean guitar work are all scattered throughout this album. The background elements are full of melodiousness, and those subtleties are worth paying attention to on this disc. No, this is not easy and simplistic black metal. The intricacy is at times slightly adventurous too, while other moments show a bit of a chaotic edge. The good sound production helps getting the different layers of their work. Personally, I would have wished for less fast parts and more of those mid-paced times myself, as always.

There are no bad tracks on Militae, but I can't point to one as my favorite. Still, this CD goes by quick and easy.
