Wow! That's quite a departure from what Svarti Loghin used to come up with. On this new album, the Swedish quartet has composed for us eight new tracks of a different type of black metal. On Drifting Through the Void, the musicians are actually doing the opposite of everyone else. They have brought upfront the harmonious elements, while keeping the harsher tones in the background. They still have raspy vocals, distorted riffs and so on, but those are given a second role in the play. Ambient keyboards, clean arpeggios and acoustic guitars are holding the first place here, right in the spotlight. This inevitably results in a very melodic and somewhat dilute black metal. Throughout this album, a feel of melancholy is present. You have a couple of short, keyboard driven instrumental pieces called: "Red Sun Set" and "Nightsky Interlude". It was with a bit of surprise, a pleasant one by the way, when I heard the title track. Indeed, since this composition contains lots of acoustic guitars and bear a country style with the harmonica.
Although not a masterpiece or a groundbreaking album, Drifting Through the Void has its surprises in stock.
