Primal Fear: 16.6 All Over the World (DVD)

Contemporary live heavy metal DVDs don't get much better than Primal Fear's 16.6 All Over the World. Featuring a full set recorded recently in Switzerland (some versions of this DVD come with a live CD recorded in the USA, mine did not), the band are on fire from the first notes of "Under the Radar" and don't let up till the crushing finale that is "Chainbreaker". Extremely well put together by the Frontiers Records crew, the DVD also features five video clips, a bootleg section with footage from various tours, as well as a fun documentary showing the making of the 16.6 (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) album.

The highlight for all fans of course is going to be the jam packed Switzerland show, and it doesn't disappoint one bit. The band for this show (and tour) was Ralf Scheepers on vocals, Mat Sinner on bass & vocals, Henny Wolter on guitar & vocals, Randy Black on drums, and Alex Beyrodt on guitar, filling in for Magnus Karlsson, who could not make the tour due to he and his wife recently having twins. Though Beyrodt filled in on the fly, you could almost swear he's been playing with the band for years, as he and Wolter make a more than formidable guitar team throughout. The tall and chiseled Ralf Scheepers prowls at center stage and shines on Primal Fear classics such as "Nuclear Fire", "Chainbreaker", "Angel in Black", "Battalions of Hate", and "Metal is Forever", showing his excellent vocal range and power on each and every track. The real treat though are two of the mellower pieces-Ralf's duet with Pamela Moore on the alluring "Fighting the Darkness", and the acoustic "Hands of Time", where Scheepers, Wolter, and Sinner all share lead vocals in what is perhaps the most stunning piece here. New tracks like "Riding the Eagle", "Killbound", and "Six Times Dead (16.6)" fit in well with all the older gems, though it would have been great for the band to also squeeze in "Smith & Wesson" or "The Exorcist"...can't have it all I guess. The awesome "Seven Seals" is also here, another of the band's more recent classics, and you also get to witness a wild guitar duel between Wolter & Beyrodt.

Loads of metal fun from start to finish, 16.6 All Over the World is a must see for any fan of heavy & melodic power metal. Primal Fear are one of those bands that should be huge right about now, and hopefully if they keep releasing quality material like they have the world will soon be in the palm of their hands.
