Beliar: Far Beyond…

Not much is known about this German act that is simply called Beliar. Basically, this is the solo project of Illunis who also got some help from Ater. Having self –released an album and single, Beliar is presenting their second effort on Naturmacht Productions.

You won't find anything too fancy or extravagant on this album. This is your typical cold, raw and sometimes repetitive black metal. Some good crunchy and distorted riffs accompany the usual sick raspy vocals. A dry and cardboard sounding drum kit is partly responsible for that rawer edge. The moderate parts are crunchier than the faster ones. For one thing, the fast/furious modes are often done with no bass at all, to what I can decipher. Then again, they might be very low in the mix. Did I mention sick rasps? Birds, branches, wind and rain samplings are adding a nice atmospheric touch throughout this album. Same goes for the clean guitar parts scattered here and there. My overall favorite composition is named "Malefizshoin". What I liked about this one is its crushing riffs & bass duet which turn out to be quite doom sounding in the moderate parts, a bit reminiscent to vintage Black Sabbath.

All in all, Far Beyond… is not too bad, but I prefer hearing more harmonies in my black metal arts.
