The Zappa Plays Zappa initiative is now approaching its five year anniversary and has successfully taken the music of Frank Zappa around the world, exposing it to a new generation that were far too young or not even born to have appreciated Frank in his heyday. With a raft of material to choose from there is no sign of the format becoming stale and this sprawling two disc set features fourteen tracks that date from 1969's "King King" to "The Deathless Horsie" and "Bamboozled By Love" from 1981. Having seen ZPZ for the first time on the Prog Nation trek last year it is evident that they are much in demand on the live circuit both in the US and over here in Europe where Frank only achieved sporadic commercial success.
Return Of The Son Of was recorded, in the main, at the bands three night residency at Chicago's Morse Theatre in October 2008 with a handful of songs also included from New York the same year and Manchester, England, in 2009. As anyone who has seen them live will attest, Dweezil Zappa takes a number of lengthy solos throughout the show and these are included here in all of their glory, notably on "Zomby Woof" and "The Torture Never Stops". In the sleeve notes Dweezil acknowledges as much whilst also noting that "it's the place where I connect most with my father's music". The rest of the band make significant contributions and the original vocal idiosyncrasies on "Billy The Mountain" and "Pygmy Twylyte" are fully realised here.
With the impeccable audio quality across the two discs this is a near perfect representation of the Zappa Plays Zappa live experience and hopefully marks just the beginning of more such releases from the band in the coming years.
