The Funky Knights: The Funky Knights

New York's The Funky Knights formed way back in the late 80s. They began as a touring funk/blues band and were known as one of the hardest working bands in New York City. Known for their wild costumes and highly theatrical stage shows they have developed quite a reputation. The band's live shows are a mixture of original songs and classic funk numbers. Over twenty years later the band has finally released their debut album The Funky Knights. Group members include Wild Bill Olland (vocals, keyboards), Paul Gifford (vocals, drums), Reid Trevaskis (guitars, vocals), Paul Latimer (guitars) and Randy Pratt (bass guitars).

This album is pure fun to listen to and has been a welcomed treat. I must admit that I am not an expert in funk music but have delved into the blues fairly often over the years. When you spin The Funky Knights prepare yourself for a large helping of funk, blues and soul. The funky rhythm section of Gifford and Pratt really drives these tunes, in particular the deep bass of Pratt. His bass playing is an essential ingredient in the band's sound and his pulsating chill out dance grooves are prevalent throughout. Mixed in with all the funky goodness are bluesy based tunes where the guitar cranks it up at times with some searing leads. The vocals of Olland and Trevaskis are also a highlight here. Smooth or gravelly they really add the necessary soul to help these compositions come alive.

Some of my favourites include the pure blues of "Hound Dog", the bluesy rock of "Passing Parade" featuring catchy vocals and razor sharp lead guitar and the deep funky bass groove of "Money Talks" where the keyboards really hit the mark. The humorous "Wrap the Phone" is pure fun and good for a laugh while the soulful "Do It Right" combines the soul of Barry White and the tasty grooves of Marvin Gaye making for a richly melodic slice of blues, funk and pop.

The Funky Knights have produced a solid debut album making it clear where their passion lies. All blues and funk music fans rejoice – this one should be right up your alley.
