Destruction: Savage Symphony-The History of Annihilation (DVD)

Look up the term 'thrash metal' in the dictionary, and chances are you'll find the German band Destruction lurking somewhere in the explanation of what that musical sub-genre is all about. They've been an institution on the metal scene since the mid-80's, and though there have been line-up changes over the years, they still keep plugging away and delivering quality thrash. AFM has just released this thrilling package that will have loyal Destruction fans celebrating; titled Savage Symphony-The History of Annihilation, this DVD features the band's full set at the Wacken Open Aire Festival in 2007, plus a boatload of special features.

Whether you followed Destruction back in the 80's, the 90's, the 2000's, or have stuck with them from the beginning, there's something for everyone in the Wacken set. Featuring ALL current and previous members of the band (yes, there's 3 drum kits on stage), the Wacken show is quite simply a killer performance. Bassist/vocalist Schmier leads the band through such classics as "Curse the Gods", "Mad Butcher", "Life Without Sense", "Total Disaster", "The Butcher Strikes Back", "Bestial Invasion", and many, many other legendary thrash cuts. Live, Destruction's songs come across even more brutal and complex than their studio counterparts, thanks in part to the intricate guitar riffs of Mike, as well as former member Harry. It's really great to see these two playing side by side again, as you can witness for yourself on a few of the songs here. Throw in a thrilling three-drummer jam, guest appearances from members of Overkill, Sodom, Communic, and Rage, plus a huge, totally appreciative crowd at Wacken, and you have a killer live set from a band that keeps delivering the goods. Oh yeah, the sound and video quality is superb, with some extra kudos going out to the camera crew who really nailed all the important shots, especially those of The Butcher mascot and his chainsaw alongside some scantily clad, blood soaked vixens.

Plenty of special features abound here, including a detailed history of the band with interviews, backstage & tour footage, videos, and a real nice booklet stocked with photos. It all adds up to a must see DVD for any thrash metal fan, and a mandatory purchase for Destruction enthusiasts.
