Mr Iced Earth John Schaffer has a new project, called Sons Of Liberty. This is not your normal project but John's attempt to make people more aware of world events. With so much great music behind him from Iced Earth and the impressive Demons And Wizards, John has a considerable following so many should take notice of this his latest work. If you feel strongly enough about an issue and are in such a position to have a say then why not, especially someone with influence. Too many people sit on the fence as they say and don't speak their mind.
Brush - Fires Of The Mind has some guest guitar solos, but apart from that this is John's work who takes care of vocals and instruments, and once again there is no mistaking John's guitar style, so yes this is still very much a CD of the metal kind. Although another Iced Earth isn't what you will get, instead you will find some music in that vein but the similarities end there; this is a different beast so it's not really fair to judge this against IE. The other significant point worth mentioning is that Brush - Fires Of The Mind is available for free download from the Sons Of Liberty website, also there is the option to purchase a higher quality download if this doesn't suffice, or you can have a CD version which will be released by Century Media Records.
Being the type of album Brush - Fires Of The Mind is the lyrics contain many theories on matters like corruption, which may serve to feed any listeners suspicions, though in the end you will of course draw your own conclusions. The lyrics below are taken from the track "Jeckyll Island" to give you a sample of what has been written:
"We know that you manipulate the markets and blow out the economy
You create recessions and depressions
So that you can consolidate and steal wealth from the middle class
We are awake and we will rise up!"
"Educate yourself, who really runs the scheme?
Who causes all the wars? Who really pulls the strings?"
John's vocals are quite good, he has a distinctive powerful style that gets the job done. The music is chiefly mid tempo metal, although "Save Our Souls" kicks it up some. Brush - Fires Of The Mind starts of favorably with the first three tracks, and finishes off strongly. I found that overall it's no total killer metal release, yet there are some standout songs, so give it a go and really, how can you lose? Sons Of Liberty - Brush - Fires Of The Mind is free after all.
