Fairclough, Peter: Momentarily

Having never heard of this fellow before, I had no idea what this would sound like. By looking at the pictures on the CD though, I was certain it fell outside of the metal and prog spectrum.

Well, this is perhaps the first time I've had to review something of this nature for Sea of Tranquility. At first, I was under the impression that this music was suitable for a band playing on those cruises; you know something that a crowd of elderly would enjoy. With this last spin though, it felt somewhat different. No, this is no extreme or even progressive music as such. Momentarily is more mellow and mainstream. This is what you could hear in one of those night clubs, the jazz ones. The music recorded here is quite relaxing and melodic. You know they are crafty musicians; one proof of this are the intricate times signature they often use. This is not an instrumental work since the band is fronted by Hayley Youell, who has a warm and jazzy voice. Many compositions are following a set formula: intro (piano or bass), then the vocals, followed then by one or two solos (varied instruments). That fixed pattern reminded me of an album I've from Jean Luc Ponty, to a certain degree. Some solos are pretty good, but I could have done without the generic drum solo on "20:39. The bass has a higher tonality than usual, reminiscent to Stanley Clarke or the late 70's early 80's Frank Zappa.

All in all, Momentarily is a good album, a bit too long maybe, repetitive in structure and having a relaxing nature. This disc might be a success with older fans and the quiet music lover.
