Second album from this young Swedish AOR band who made huge strides around Europe with their debut album in 2008 which really made its mark on the Melodic Rock scene. Instead of simply repeating the formula, second time around the sextet have upped their game even further with the thirteen tracks here evidencing their development both as musicians and songwriters. Admittedly comparisons with 80's heavyweights such as Europe (notably "Out of this World" / "Prisoners in Paradise" era) will still be made but there is sense that with Freedom Rock, H.E.A.T. have gone some way to creating their own identity.
"We're Gonna Make It" starts the album in a positive, feel-good manner; strong on melody and with vocalist Kenny Leckremo powerful and self-assured. "Black Night" boasts a duet with Avantasia / EdGuy frontman Tobias Sammet and is a glorious retro-rocker that delivers a killer solo and immediate chorus. The more contemporary "I Can't Look The Other Way" would be a sure fire hit single on both sides of the Atlantic if mainstream radio still acknowledged the existence of melodic rock in 2010. When I first heard the debut album I felt it lacked that one killer song that would take the bands live performances to the next level but "Nobody Loves You Like I Do" is three minutes of melodic rock perfection and could well be that very song. A commercial pop rocker of simplistic beauty with a scorching solo and Queen-infected harmonies it sums up all that there is to love about a band like H.E.A.T. and tucked away at track number nine is the albums hidden gem. This entire collection oozes quality, class and consistency and "Beg, Beg, Beg", "Everybody Wants To Be Someone" and "Cast Away" are other standout moments in an album of many highlights.
