Bleeding Fist: Macabrum Bestia Ex Abyssus

Bleeding Fist are a Slovenian Black/Thrash Metal band that have already released two well received full length albums, so with the intentions to build on that momentum with an EP that has the mission to "get in, get out, DESTROY!" we have Macabrum Bestia Ex Abyssus. In truth there are only four new tracks on this mini album as the self titles opener is a spooky atmospheric scene setter for the mayhem to begin and closing track "Messiah" is a well executed cover version of a Hellhammer song.

The four other tracks on show give an no nonsense account of what Bleeding Fist are all about as they assault your ears at every opportunity with their take on what is in truth straight ahead black metal with a few thrash leanings. That's not to say that they should be dismissed as yet another band of copyists happy to retread old ground, as while their attack won't win any prizes for originality, the overall effect is hard hitting and interesting enough to hold the attention. An understanding of dynamics helps the flow of the songs as not only do they romp through some bludgeoning heavy riff-fests, but they are capable of slight tempo shifts that change the perspective of their blows. Growler Etienne "Hellscream" Chelleri keeps his tone deep and melds into the mayhem in a way that intensifies the impact of the furious guitar and bass work, while the drums romp through everything in their site. At times things can lose focus a little as the subtleties are buried in the intensity of the music and had the production been a touch sharper that is something that could have possibly been avoided.

Not for the faint hearted, however if you need a fix of brutal black metal, you could do much worse than Bleeding Fist.
