Bath, Darrell: Love and Hurt

Think Bob Dylan meets Keith Richards meets Johnny Thunders and that should give you a pretty good idea of the bluesy swagger that veteran guitarist / vocalist Darrell Bath possesses. Darrell cut his teeth with British punk outfit The U.K. Subs in the mid 80's and underground band The Crybabys before a brief stint with sleaze rockers The Dogs D'Amour eventually led to him collaborating with Ian Hunter on a couple of his solo records in the mid 90's.

Originally released on a small indie label in 2001, Love and Hurt was Darrell's first official solo album and now thanks to Angel Air Records it's available once again in this newly remastered edition that also throws in a couple of bonus tracks for good measure.

"So Young So Wise" kicks things off with a distinctly Dylan-esque shuffle as Darrell's nasally sounding vocal tone and swampy blues licks could have easily been lifted off any of the legendary singer-songwriter's recent offerings. The vibe is loose and at the same time fairly laid back, so the warm and rich tones that ooze effortlessly out of tracks like "Sweet Warm Lover" , "Still Learning" and "Tumbleweed" only serves to further highlight the abundance of talent this man possesses as both musician and songwriter. The two bonus cuts "All The Good Times" and the gritty cover of The Stones' "Flight 505" both recorded long after the sessions for Love and Hurt wrapped up nevertheless sound perfectly at home here. The nostalgic feel of the lyrics on "All The Good Times" are complimented perfectly by Bath's poignant slide guitar work, while "Flight 505", originally recorded for a Swedish released Stones tribute album back in 2003 called We Love You features more of Bath's greasy guitar work amid some scorching honky-tonk piano.

Almost ten years later it's great to finally have a proper reissue of this long treasured album. If you're a classic rock fan who's into the soulful, grimy sounds of bands like The Faces and Mick Taylor-era Stones then Love and Hurt is definitely one of those records to add to your collection.
