Released: Oct 1978 / Produced by: Toto
Toto's debut arguably their finest moment; proving what five L.A. session pros can do when they set talents and experience to creative mode. Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate's silk grooves set the table for Bobby Kimball's bitchin' blue-eyed soul; recipes fashioned and arranged by maestro David Paich, topped with shredding soloing and coloring of "Steve's" Lukather and Porcaro.
Elements of pop, R&B, progressive rock, even disco (think 1978) deftly pulled off. Stacked with standouts, including stadium prog rock of "Child's Anthem," infectious riff and dance groove of "I'll Supply The Love," Boz Scaggs-like "Georgy Porgy" (a lesson learned while band backed him up), exhaustingly soulful "You Are The Flower" and hard rock riffing of "Girl Goodbye." Rock staple "Hold The Line" managed to score #5 Billboard post on a Billboard chart overwhelmed with then all-consuming disco craze. Hard to believe mature sounding Lukather was all but 21 at the time, with many accomplishments already behind him. A few throwaway tracks, but insignificant in ratio. Lenny Castro provides outstanding percussion. Essential.
