Life: Cocoon

Veteran British guitarist / vocalist Robin George seems to have found himself a formidable ally in Angel Air Records who are giving some of his previously released albums a second lease on life. This project entitled Life was formed by George and vocalist Nick Tart (Diamond Head) in the early 90's and their sole album Cocoon was originally released on a small indie label back in 1997. Fast forward to the beginning of this year and Robin has gone and given it a proper remastering.

While I did enjoyed Robin's recent hard rock collaboration on the RAW album with bassist Pete Way and drummer Chris Slade in Damage Control, this album unfortunately consists of nothing more than fifteen mediocre AOR tracks which all sound the same. Looking for a bright side here, it's not a total right off because in fact both George and Tart turn in pretty solid performances overall. No the real problem is that the music sounds extremely dated, even by 1990's standards. Power ballads like "Don't Come Crying" and "Oxygen" might have sounded comparable alongside anything on Bad English's debut album, and in fact Tart's voice at times sounds a lot like John Waite's, however it appears that this project was not only ten years too late, but they also forgot to write anything that was even remotely memorable. That's really the bottom line here.

Cooccon is only going to appeal to a limited amount of people; and quite honestly most of those will probably be the diehard Robin George fans. However it wouldn't surprise me if even the completist decides to take a pass on this one as well.
