Fatalist: The Depths of Inhumanity

Steeped in the tradition of classic Death Metal, California Metaller's, Fatalist, has released their debut record, The Depth's of Inhumanity on Ibex Moon Records. Their 11 track CD, while not exactly groundbreaking, is a decent beginning and has a sound familiar to both Entombed and early Slayer of which both had to have been obvious influences.

Fatalist shows that they are a capable band with some cool riffage on songs like "Frozen Epitaph" and "Internal Misery" and for a young band, I like their nod to the old school. Their strength seems to be the more mid paced type of tune, where they are able to lock it down and get their point across. However, it's when they bring it up to breakneck speed that the real problems begin. The added speed makes these songs pretty much unlistenable and a total mess, unlike when they stay in that mid pace where they are able to hit their stride. Production is not the best here, but the guitars are up front in the mix and buzzing and this suits what Fatalist does best.

The Depth's of Inhumanity is a decent start for this new band with their take on the old school Death Metal sound. Fatalist makes no real effort to disguise their borrowing from the already paved road of the Fathers of Death Metal, but that doesn't make them bad at all. This is their first effort and they have some growing to do, but most young bands do. Within the Death Metal realm there is only so far that a band can go, so time will tell, but if you are a fan of old school Death Metal, then Fatalist might be a band for you to check out.
