Rajna: Offering

Rajna formed in 1997 and have nine albums to their credit with their latest entitled Offering. The French duo consists of Fabrice Lefebvre (instruments and arrangements) and Jeanne Lefebvre (vocals). The music of Rajna has its origins in the far east and the Mediterranean. The sound is exotic and quite minimalistic. If I had to put a label on it I would call this Indian/Mediterranean folk music for lack of a better term. There is an aura of sadness conveyed on Offering partly through the chanting vocal style of Jeanne and also through the acoustic instruments played by Fabrice. Delicate guitar and guitar-like instruments abound, and the subtle symphonic arrangements can be trance inducing. The band is known for its use of the Iranian Santoor and Chinese Yang T'Chin which I presume is partly responsible for the rich timbre in the duo's sound. Jeanne has quite a beautiful voice and it is hard not be somewhat mesmerized with her chanting style of vocals. If you are looking for a hard rocking affair you will not find it here. The album has a nice flow and while none of the songs completely wowed me, the music is well executed so I really have no complaints. I did find it a little difficult to sit through at times as I found myself wanting something with a little more kick.

Bottom line - if you are fan of other artists on the Equilibrium label and bands such as Dead Can Dance, there is a good chance you will like Offerings. Listen to the samples and decide for yourself.
