Overkill: Ironbound

Thrash metal fans rejoice, as legendary band Overkill have returned in 2010 with a real winner, a lethal metal packed release titled Ironbound. Ironbound is a smoking thrash album, and with 15 studio albums to their name, the potent vocalist Booby "Blitz" Ellsworth and his crew are back with a bang. Once again the one known as Chaly, Overkill's winged mascot, graces their newest CDs haunting cover art.

Listening to Ironbound highlights that Overkill has one of thrash metal's most capable line-ups, as they blow the roof off with scorching performances. Once the band hooks into "The Green And Black", the memories of fine thrash come flooding back, and those heavy riffs have you hooked, in what is simply a fantastic ballistic opener. Title track "Ironbound" is also a real fire cracker of a tune, Overkill adjusting the pace at times on this one. Ironbound is much more than just a straight forward pedal to the floor speedster, yes there is plenty of swiftness as to be expected, but that variety is one of Ironbound's charms.

If there was to be an updated 'big four' of thrash, it would be a crime not to include Overkill, as they are a band that deserve more accolades than they've been given after staying true to a genre they have always excelled at and believed in for so many years. There is no doubt that Ironbound is one of the best thrash albums of recent times, as those including Testament and Death Angel have shown in recent years, many of the pioneers still lead the way. Compared to other big name releases, with the quality metal that is on Ironbound, Overkill have also managed to kick Megadeth's End Game's butt and also slayed Slayer's World Painted Blood.
