From Finland comes the latest entrant into the brutal & technical death metal sweepstakes, Abhordium. Their brand new 18 minute EP Declaration of Perdition is a bubbling, boiling cauldron of twisted, complex riffery, jackhammer drum blasts, and evil growls & grunts. The band is comprised of vocalist Kari Laaksonen, the guitar team of Jarkko Neuvonen & Antti Oksanen, bassist Mikko Hellstrom, and drummer Arttu Aalto, and these five have put together a dandy little sampler of brutality here. Though this EP will certainly appeal to fans of Decapitated, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Immolation, Nile, and the like, Abhordium do a good job of putting their own identity into these five tunes. "Scapegoats" is especially inspiring, as the gutteral vocals combat the churning upheaval of riffs and blasting drums, while "Back to the Chaos" is a constantly shifting amoeba of tempo changes, tremelo picked riffs, tortured pinch harmonics, slower dirges, and acrobatic drum work.
Apparently the band is furiously putting together material for their debut full-length here in 2010, and judging by what can be heard on Declaration of Perdition, we can only expect great things from this Finnish ensemble in the months to come.
