Though Dennis 'Piggy' D'Amour died in 2005, his spirit lives on in the music of his former band, the expirmental metal act Voivod. The band from Quebec have finally decided to carry on, drummer Michel 'Away' Langevin & singer Snake bringing back original bassist Blacky and new guitar recruit Dan Mongrain for a series of live dates, including this one, recorded in Japan in 2008 in front of plenty of adoring fans, who seem way more lively than most metal audiences from the Far East. It's a great set, as the band roars through classics such as "Ravenous Medicine", "Tornado", "Voivod", "Nuclear War", "Nothingface", and others, even a crushing version of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine". Good to see Blacky back in the band again (replacing the departed Jason Newsted) and new axe man Mongrain seems to fit right in. There are also a few bonus clips from a Quebec homecoming show from July 2009, an unreleased mini-documentary about the band, and a fun interview with Voivod fan Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters.
Whether they were playing Venom inspired thrash metal, progressive metal, punk, or complex & avant-garde heavy rock, Voivod always kept their fans on their toes and never made the same album twice. You get a good cross reference of their material here, but in the end this live set will make you want to dive into their discography and really see what they were all about. Whether this line-up continues on and decides to record new music remains to be seen, but as a tribute to the talents of the late Piggy, this is a recommended DVD.
