Arckanum: Kostogher

Kostogher is Arckanum's second effort that was first released back in 1997, and now given a second life by Debemur Morti.

This time around, solitary composer Shamaetae opted for a more straightforward approach compared to his previous work. You will hear some direct type of Black Metal pulsating at high speed during most of its duration. I've also noticed a slightly rawer edge, even though the production remains actually pretty decent. On the other hand, you still have the mysticism and nature references, as well as the more traditional Nordic elements and passages that are while worth listening. "Intro" contains old door noises, owl, wind, sick spoken words and percussions. Shamanic voices, more owls, horse, birds, crunchy riffs and violin follows on " Skoghens Minnen Vekks"; another good mystical Black Metal composition. After a series of punchy Black Metal anthems comes a great instrument track called "Gamall Uvermark", which is probable Arckanum's most melodic composition. On this beauty, you can hear nostalgic violin tones, backing female vocals, all this surrounded by wind and the famous owl. More nature samplings, distorted leads and tremolo pickings to come on "Graemelae ok Væ"; a piece having no percussions at all. To close things up, "Kri Til Depha Doghi", mix together fast Black Metal with violin, whispers and thunder.

Overall, Kostogher is a good Black Metal opus with pleasant nature elements and mysticism done a la Shamatae.
