GR & Full- Blown Expansion: GR & Full- Blown Expansion

Gregory Raimo is a multi-instrumentalist and electronic artist working at the experimental end of art-rock. This compilation of seven improvised pieces starts with a lengthy early-Floydian styled epic, ala Set the controls…, with processed vocals, Barrett-like guitar soundscapes and an intricate bass pattern, driven along with a compôte of cymbal-hissing and rhythmic drum chants. Interludes of calmness break the steady hypnotic rhythm and occasional roll and swell of the guitar sequences.

Exuding sax effects and strange distorted vocal noises, the next track takes a more standard rock road with a heavily accented rhythm and some crystalline Shadows-like guitar expressions and trills. "The metal spike", which follows, leans on the intricate drum pattern with a stuttering bass and a combination of tightly controlled guitar and vocal, heavy on the reverb. "The Intercessor" shouts and wails rather more than he 'speaks' on this riff and roll, Hawkwind-like, space trip. The middle section decomposes into a freaky sequence with the rhythm humming along just below the surface while voice and guitar inject sharp, spicy flavours.

The title of the fifth track is expressed by the fuzzed mayhem of wildly scything guitars and vocals spiralled into a rough rhythm which gradually breaks apart into a cacophony of sound at the end. The grammatically challenged, "All stoned day long they take you", features a narrated space story, peppered with spiky guitar jams and underpinned by distant organ chords. Finally GR takes us out to "Blind black or pearly white", the title hinting at the introduction of an electric piano. This composition takes us into more of an electronic domain as distinct from the stoner-rock ethic of the preceding tracks.

Just shows what you can do with a guitar, electronics and some drums. Psych and stoner fans will enjoy this stylish outing by an imaginative artist.
