Together now for some five years and having received both critical acclaim and the support of national radio, Shabby Rogue have adopted an old school garage rock approach to second album By Hook and By Crook, released on March 1st, which has a rough and ready vibe befitting an album that was recorded in a converted barn in the Brecon Beacons. A heady mix of catchy melodies, pop sensibilities and ramshackle, chaotic pop-punk riffing they are not an easy band to classify and could easily draw admirers from both the mainstream and the alt-rock community. The acoustic strumming of "The Mountain" hints at an influence inspired by the Dylan of the 60's but it's not all short and simple ditties as the six minute "Reason" and nine minute downbeat epic title track head off into lengthy jam band workouts that are a feature of artists such as the Dave Matthews Band. If you are looking for something just that little bit offbeat and quirky then Shabby Rogue are definitely worthy of further investigation.
