Veteran melodic metal act Jaded Heart return with the strong Perfect Insanity, a worthy follow up to their 2007 release Sinister Mind. Their time tested formula remains the same-catchy songs filled with plenty of metal muscle and hard rock swagger, easily approachable for both the power metal and arena rock crowd. Lead singer Johan Fahlberg is really starting to sound like he belongs at this point in time, as the shadow of former founding member & vocalist Michael Bormann finally has been lifted.
There's no shortage of beefy rockers and manic, almost power/prog-metal numbers throughout Perfect Insanity, such as "Blood Stained Lies", "Love is a Killer", and the wild ripper "Freedom Call", each one complete with strong lead & backing vocals, crisp guitar riffs, a smattering of keyboards, and tight rhythms. In fact, it's the huge swell of backing vocals that really sets these songs apart from other genre fare, especially on the ballads "Tonight" and "One Life One Death", where the band brings back memories of the glory days of acts such as Dokken, Winger, Europe, and White Lion. In fact, there's a few songs here that, if they were released in the 80's, probably would have been staples on the arena rock scene, in particular, "Rising" and "Psycho Kiss". These tracks have fist pumping choruses and plenty of crunchy riffs, and would have fit right in during the days of the hair metal frenzy.
Where an album like Perfect Insanity fits in today's metal scene is surely up for debate, but there's no denying that it's a release filled with an abundance of catchy hooks, plenty of guitar thunder, and the right amount of attitude. If you like your metal accessible but still heavy, then you'll certainly want to give this one a shot.
