Corciolli: Lightwalk

Corciolli is a name new to me, possibly because he plays a style of music falling within the electronic new age genre, a type of music I am not overly familiar with. Corciolli was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and began playing the piano at an early age and soon began a life long fascination with keyboards and synthesizers. Corciolli has played with an extensive list of artists including Vangelis, Yanni, Alan Parsons Project and Dead Can Dance.

On his latest album Lightwalk, Corciolli (piano, sythesizers, sequencers) is joined by ClŠudio Machado (bass) and Christiano Rocha (drums). Making guest appearances are Tony Levin (bass) and Andre Matos (vocals), former voice of the metal bands Shaman and Angra. I do feel Levin's talent was a little under used as he was not as noticeable as I thought he would be.

As you can probably guess the music on Lightwalk is pretty mellow stuff and very laid back. Although the album did not 'wow' me, the songs are pleasant enough and well done for the genre. Corciolli's sound is built upon layers of synths and electronics creating a vast aural landscape of texture and mood and there are some beautiful piano melodies on display such as the dreamy "Star" featuring the sublime vocals of Andre Matos. He really does have a great voice that suits the music perfectly. I only wish he sang on more than three tracks. The aptly titled "Dreams" is another piece where the voice of Matos and Corciolli's piano blend together nicely. The title track has a slightly darker mood where the synthesizer is used to create some deeper sounds. The gentle sounding "Pegasus" shows off the talented Marcus Viana on electric violin. The sounds he creates matches nicely with Corciolli's soft, soaring synthesizers and delicate piano.

Overall, this is a good new age album and one that I will probably play again when I am in the mood for something more tranquil and serene. If you are a fan of new age or mellow electronic music you should probably listen to the samples provided on MySpace and check it out for yourself.
