Temple of Baal: Lightslaying Rituals
Temple of Ball are one of France's most prominent Death Metal acts and with their third full length album Lightslaying Rituals, they leave no doubt that they have worked long and hard to gain that reputation. This is an album crammed full of full throttle, breakneck, woooargh infused vocal, metal and whilst on initial contact the effect is quite breath taking, those first impressions do wear thin a little with consecutive visits.
Tracks like "Triumph of Heretic Fire" and "Angstgeist" illustrate a mighty power and enough needle sharp precision to be completely stunned by their impact, however across the nine tracks of the album there just isn't enough originality to make this album stand out in an extremely crowded extreme metal corner. The four piece are all undoubtedly skilled as musicians, however especially during the most ferociously paced moments on the CD there is often a worry that the band are only a split second from losing control of the mighty beast they are attempting to tame with their onslaught.
There are no songs on the album that are below par, however the likes of "Dead Cut" are too close to being generic Death Metal and I have to suggest that played alongside four or five other bands from this genre it would be difficult to pick out anything to make Temple of Baal shine through.
If you are a dedicated follower of the Death Metal scene then have no doubt that this album will satisfy your every need, however if you are hoping to find something here that will push the envelope, even a little, then after repeated listens you may be left a seeking something a little less one dimensional.
