Nebuleyes: The Universal Being

Operatic vocals have a place in metal; just listen to bands like Therion, Epica and Tarja era Nightwish for fantastic examples of how it can work. But in the case of French symphonic/progressive metal band Nebuleyes, things are not as successful.

My lack of enthusiasm has to do with their amalgamation of operatic vocals. Right off the bat, I was expecting a lot from Nebuleyes, but as The Universal Being commenced with "Universal Prelude", picking up pace with "Korzum Inc..." the music and vocals really didn't mesh. This is the main problem on The Universal Being- the vocalist is a good singer, no doubts there, but that's not the issue, it's that the vocals just don't pair up well with this style of metal.

The Universal Being would be better suited with a different style of vocals, although it's not all bad and there are some added limited male vocals, but honestly the results would be much better if Nebuleyes ditched or even cut back this style of operatics. Those parts without these vocals were some of the better moments, like on "Mother Universe", but those passages were few and far between, which is a shame as I feel I could really like this band.
