Paterson, Lawrence: Blaze Bayley - At The End Of The Day (book)
Written by Blaze Bayley band drummer Lawrence "Larry" Paterson, At The End Of The Day is a balanced account of the career of the former Wolfsbane and Iron Maiden frontman together with background on the bands current line-up that has seen well deserved success with The Man Who Would Not Die album and tour cycle. At close on 400 pages Paterson deals with all of the contentious issues that have dogged Bayley's personal and public life including the infamous "Blaze Gets Mad" incident in Chile of which YouTube provides a permanent reminder together with the tragic loss of wife Debbie just when his career was once again in the ascendancy. This is a sometimes uncomfortable reading experience as you realise just how much Blaze has been the victim over the years with laughable management and record company politics seemingly always holding him back.
As an early Wolfsbane fan I would have liked to have seen more than just 20-odd pages on the band but their tale is a book in itself. Steve Harris and Janick Gers speak of Blaze with warmth and clearly appreciate that he played a full part in keeping Maiden alive during what was a difficult period for Metal as a whole. Overall Paterson has done an excellent job in telling what is a remarkable story of the man from Tamworth and with a new album Promise and Terror due early in 2010 the final chapter is still a long way off.
Highly recommended.
