Go-Go Fightmaster: Sound 1

Go–Go Fightmaster is a U.S. band that plays avant-garde jazz and have just released their new CD Sound 1. In the band are Aaron Bennett (saxes, straw), John Finkbeiner (guitar, straw), Lisa Mezzacappa (contrabass) and Vijay Anderson (drums). The band play an experimental style of jazz that is pretty hard to listen to, at least for this reviewer. Saxophone, bass and drums are the main instruments with the songs loosely constructed around saxophone arrangements and steady bass lines. The songs have more to do with noise than actual music, with very little musicality whatsoever. The CD contains thirteen tracks, a few of which are shorter numbers where there experimentalism gets the best of the band as they demonstrate just how unmusical music can actually be. Describing individual songs would be rather futile but if meandering bass and saxophone playing that is all over the map sounds to your liking then by all means check it out.

In the liner notes it says, "Go-Go Fightmaster does not like cheese (except on crackers)." Let me tell you, I was dying for some cheesy music after listening to this convoluted mess. I will give the band 1.5 stars as they do possess musicianship, but that is as high as I can go for this release.
