Way, way back a long time ago, well before many metal
bands began taking themselves so darned seriously,
before they started wearing half the gear from their
local Army Reserve battalion on stage, a lot of old
school bands had a sense of humor and a sense that
half the ugly growling and snarling they did on stage
was part of an image. Thank the metal gods that
Pro-Pain are here to remind us of those glory days.
Comprised of a series of classic underground metal
songs (tunes from Celtic Frost, Motorhead and Slayer)
plus a smattering of hardcore and punk tunes (Black
Flag's "Damaged II," Discharge's "Never Again" and
Agnostic Front's "Your Mistake"), Run For Cover is more than a halfhearted attempt to appear cool. Like
all the best tribute records (and this reporter is
definitely not a major fan of such collections), you
not only get to learn which songs inspired the artist
but also find a few tracks you might not have
otherwise encountered. (Life Of Agony's excellent
"Weeds" and the gleeful "Terpentin" from Germany's
Bohse Onkelz--sung in the father tongue--are two that
might have fallen under my radar without this
collection.)
Plus, at 40 minutes, Run For Cover doesn't quite have the chance to wear out its welcome. And although the production is (Gasp!) a little too clean in some
places (hardcore needs a lot, not a little dirt), this
is still a great batch of songs played with starry
eyes. Fun-to-read liner notes from bassist/vocalist
Gary Meskil (ex-Crumbsuckers) are the inspiring insult
to the whole glorious injury.
