Rusty Eye: Possessor

Growing up here in Michigan every kid spent Saturday afternoon watching Sir Graves Ghastly. He was the local Detroit host for the weekend horror show. Now he never had the first run movies. He always showed either the old classics or the low budget monster flicks. Rusty Eye is the metal version of Sir Graves. On the disc Possessor they offer you 13 (of course) sinister snippets of ghoulish delights in a raw, energetic fashion that will please all of the Fangoria faithful!

Mr. Rust/bassist and vocalist, Miss Randall/drums and vocals, along with Baron Murtland on guitar make up this California based unit who originally formed in the underground world of Mexican metal. After hammering home their brand of heavy, guitar oriented rock and roll south of the border, they moved north to show their stuff throughout the L.A. scene, the band then went into hibernation to create this testimonial to things that go bump in the night.

Don't expect a polished overproduced work here. This is raw, guttural metal that is played in a way to suit the B movie image that they are projecting on this album. Short and sweet…It works!

Mr. Rust uses his menacing growl to become the bad guy throughout this album. On songs like "11.02 Day Of The Dead" he is the consume undead voice. Against that you have the melodic vocals of Miss Randall that makes you think of the damsel in distress as you fend off the zombies in this heavy metal horror flick. This song shows the band flashing the punk influences that help shape their sound.

The band seems to draw from a multitude of styles. Sometimes punkish as in the last song, other times they have a very thrashy attack like on "Those That Flee From The Sun". With Mr. Rust's death metal growling, they clearly show they have a hardcore side to the band too. They even turn to a more progressive metal feel on songs like "Somnambulist Possession". Here Miss Randall takes the lead vocals with a little bit of grit herself and Mr. Rust supports her with the occasional growl. The guitars on this one take you on a gothic trip of the most electric kind.

I would have to say that my favorite cut on the disc is the chugging hard rocker "The Serial Kind". Guest vocalist Alex Mitchell from Circus of Power and Miss Randall trading clean vocals on this piece that sounds like it could be an Alice Cooper tune. It is creepy and unnerves you with its metal trip into the brain of a very deranged fellow! This is one that will have you checking into the dark corners and jumping out of your skin when you hear a strange noise. It is what horror is all about.

I am a sucker for a good creep show and Rusty Eye gives you a very good audio version of that. It is good campy fun just like watching an old Boris Karloff movie. Sometimes you want your metal with Champaign and other times you want to just crack open a beer, this is most definitely a Budweiser type selection. It is raw and very much old school heavy metal. It is also a disc that will get under your skin in a way that will have you coming back for more. Just like those old time movies that you covered your eyes but yet had to peek between your fingers to see. Something made you watch and there is no force on the planet that would keep you from doing so. Rusty Eye is the same way. You will keep listening as they relate the tales of horror but you do get the benefit of some good old fashion metal to go along with it. I just hope that they can transfer this energy to different subject matter as you can only take this path so many times before it would wear thin. I think they will manage though, let's hope they don't go for chick flicks next!!
