Burial Ritual: Tower of Silence

This Wisconsin quartet had a first EP (Last Rites) out in 2007 before releasing their debut, Tower of Silence. Although I was not thrilled at first, I found some interesting elements with the proper time and attention given to a review item.

Burial Ritual can be considered as a Death Metal band that has also some Black Metal influences. The inspirations for the songs come from various themes like: death, the occult and burial ceremonies. As a live act, the opened for big names such as: Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir and Vital Remains. Their sound is rather good, except for the prominent double basses, which are too loud in the mix for my own taste. Distorted lead & tremolo pickings as well as those good old juicy riffs are being backed up by fat bass lines and punchy drums. The vocals are definitely of the Death Metal world, being a deep growl, bound to satisfy your taste for harsh voices. The compositions vary in paces and mood while having a certain technical, almost progressive edge. I was in fact pleasantly surprised by some acoustic arpeggios in two great tracks, "Atop the Funeral Pyre" and "The Gathering Storm". The first one has a nice Doom vibe and the other leans more towards the epic side, besides being the only instrumental piece on the disc.

Without being an outstanding CD, Tower of Silence might take you by surprise too.
